We’ve gotten more than a couple of questions on Thai last names (Hi, hellalambs, short-story-shorter and various Anonymouses!). We apologize profusely for how long it’s taken us to answer these questions, but we have no Thai mods, so we weren’t sure we could give an appropriate answer.
Although I am not Thai, I decided to do my best to tackle this one. It’s gonna be long (when do I not write long posts?) so bear with me, friends!
Unlike in East Asia, where surnames precede the given name, Thai naming conventions go first name-last name (like in Western countries). Last names are fairly new to Thailand. They’ve only been around for 100 years or so. On July 1, 1913, King Rama VI decreed that all Thai families needed a last name, and these last names had to be unique to each family. That means that (in theory) anyone that shares a Thai last name is related to each other.
Thai names seem long to English speakers because Thai is a complex language. And also because English isn’t well suited to transcribing Thai.
HOW LONG CAN A THAI LAST NAME BE?
Thai last names have a letter limit: ten. They can be as short as one letter, but they aren’t allowed to be more than ten letters long. But Thai is an abugida, not an alphabet (like English). This means that the letters have an inherent vowel sound. There are 44 consonants (with inherent vowel sounds) as well as 15 more vowels and five tones.
So when you write a letter in Thai, it usually indicates the consonant, the vowel sound and the tone. A Thai last name may only be four letters long in Thai, but when spoken, it might be as long as four syllables. For example, reoccurred is ten letters long. But overintellectualization is ten syllables long and 23 letters long.
Actually, many Thai last names are very short, like Chongrak, Boonmee, Timkun. Part of why last names became required in 1913 was because of the Nationality Act. King Rama VI was all about nationalism! He wanted Thailand to have a strong national identity, and controlling immigration and citizenship was a part of that.
Thailand has a long history of immigrants, including people from China and Myanmar. If you meet someone with a short(er) Thai last name, they’re more likely to be native Thai because their ancestors chose a last name early on. But many Thai-Chinese families immigrated/assimilated later, and so by then, many of the shorter names were taken.
NAMING CONVENTIONS IN THAILAND
So, while some Thai last names may be long, most people in Thailand don’t use their last names. It isn’t considered rude or disrespectful to address someone by their first name. In fact, first names are often enough for formal usage and nicknames are for casual. This means that almost nobody in Thailand uses their last name on a regular basis. Most people use their nicknames on a day-to-day basis, and you might not know someone’s full name or first name even though you’re friends with them.
Since you can choose your last name (as long as it isn’t taken), many native Thai last names have specific meanings behind them, like Chaidee (which means ‘kind’) or Chongrak (which means ‘loyal’.) Thai-Chinese families may also choose to make the first syllable of their Thai last name similar to their original Chinese last name, as a way of keeping connected to their roots.
Also, last names beginning with Na are only for families descended from royalty or nobility.
CHANGE YOUR NAME, CHANGE YOUR LUCK
Because you don’t use your last name very often, and because there are Thai Buddhist beliefs that indicate certain letters or combinations of letters are lucky, some families change their last names for good luck. I have no idea how often this happens, but it isn’t unheard of. So, some native Thai families with shorter surnames may have changed their last name, which often means they end up with a longer one. But they’re luckier, so hey!
THAI DIASPORA IN WESTERN NATIONS
As you can imagine, though, it’s different for Thai people who live in Western nations, like Thai-Americans. We use last names a lot here. Some Thai people shorten their surnames, like Cherry Cheva. Others prefer to keep their last name just as it is.
SO WHAT LAST NAME SHOULD I GIVE MY THAI CHARACTER?
That depends. Where is your character from? Where do they live now? What is their ethnic background? Are they gonna go by a nickname? Shorten their last name?
I am not Thai, but I do have friends who are Thai-American! Their advice on this ranged from:
So I’d like to open this up to our Thai followers! What advice do you guys have? How should a writer choose a good last name for a Thai character?

“Can I please post your art to tumblr if I credit you and link back to this? I want more people to see your beautiful art!” ]

honestly speaking, as much as i like his armor in tw3, because it is so effing great and he looks asdfasudasngrnjfds (11 out of 10), i must admit that when (for the first time) he took his mask off, i was like “put it back right now, motherfucker… what did they do to you?!”. at least he has nice eyes (not green, but nice).
ehhh, i imagined him much different… i doubt that Ciri
would have been long for his game version.
in The Lady of The Lake he must have been really hansome and attractive as fuck. “you still want

Recently Maybelline posted a photo of a beauty blogger on its Instagram - not uncommon. The difference: This blogger happened to be male. Manny Gutierrez joins a growing number of male beauty bloggers with a belief that makeup is ungendered. Will someone like Gutierrez join the likes of female models on makeup billboards? Mic decided to ask male beauty bloggers for their first-hand perspective.

so here for this
My friend Jaime introduced a new makeup line last week, and one of the cornerstones of her whole thing is that anyone can wear beautiful makeup, regardless of their gender.
I’ve always thought that eye makeup and lipstick are really pretty, and I wish I had the no-fucks-to-give confidence to try making myself fabulous with some of her makeup sometime.
Solas’s new hairstyle!
I’ve been teaching myself how to make mods lately and i wanted to put my newly aquired knowledge to good use and I noticed there were no Solas hair mods out there for download so i made one!
It is more like a wig since Solas has no hair model to work with and the only model i managed to import successfully was Ardent Blossom (the flower crown, so no cute flowers for you only mohawks) It looks weird in some lighting but it’s the best i could do to turn flowers into hair ;;
I also made a retexture for his face and scalp to match the hair but it can be used independently of course, it makes his skin smoother and less shinny, his expression softer and his eyebrows thicker, and also the shaved scalp.
These should be compatible with all DLC, you just need to get the Ardent Blossom item and equip it on him! anyway i hope you like it, enjoy <3
special thanks to @bemyamatus for the inspiration! check out their mods!
